Niklas Dorsch paints figures, scenes, and landscapes suspended in a moment extracted from a larger, unseen story. Humans, animals, and creatures occupy interiors and village streets that feel caught in a moment of intensity. What happened before, and what happens next, is a dramatic enigma.
The paintings are not planned. The figures and their narrative are discovered across painting sessions, and often re-invented: a face changes and the whole story changes. What emerges is a story about displacement, never quite belonging to the rooms they stand in. Dorsch identifies as a Grenzgänger, a German-American on the border of two cultures and not fully belonging to either.
The paintings are thickly built, with visible brushwork accumulating across the surface. Ochres and browns are set against saturated yellows, blues, and reds. Faces take on a sculptural, mask-like quality that heightens emotional pressure. Dorsch has studied at the New York Studio School and the Art Students League, and is based in Brooklyn, NY.
